An easy way to find thousands of products quickly and view commission
rates is through
affiliate networks and directories such as Commission Junction,
Linkshare, Clickbank and many others.
For the purpose of our video we chose Commission
Junction. Clink on the Commission
Junction link to create your account. Once at the web site, scroll over to and hover your mouse over "Publishers" which is on the left side of the page about mid way down the page. A drop down menu will appear. Scroll down and click on "Application" to create your account.
After creating your Commission Junction account, login and click on
"Get Links" at the top left of the page.
If you have an idea of the product or if you know the manufacturer you are
seeking, you can type it in the search box at the top of the page and click
"Find".
If you do not know the name of the product or manufacturer, you can browse
through the "Advertiser Categories" and click on any of the links that
describes what you are looking to promote.
Now you can view advertisers and see how much they will pay you to market
their product.
* You can see if they pay on a per sale or per lead basis. Per sale means
you get paid when someone purchases their product. Per lead usually means
when someone fills out a form and submits you get paid for the lead.
You can choose one or more of the advertisers for the product you want to promote by clicking the check box beside
the advertiser and click "Apply To Program".
Gather And Edit
Keywords
Step 6. Once you have a product
you want to promote and have decided this is a market you want to enter, you will then want to return
to the Yahoo Keyword Tool and gather all keywords you can
find related to your product or service.
Remember, the yahoo keyword search tool
does not provide all of the different variations of a keyword. It groups singular and plurals together as the
same keyword much of the time.
Also it does not list keywords in the proper order many times. As an
example, it sees "pay as you go cellular phone" the same as
"as you
cellular go pay phone" or
"cellular phone pay as you go". So you need to make sure YOU take care of getting all
of the different variations for that keyword, because even though
Yahoo sees them as the same, Google and MSN and other
search engines view them as different keywords.
So how do you get all of the variations?
This is a different example from the video, however I wanted to
show you a good idea of how this works.
Lets take the keyword phrase "nike baby shoes" and
brainstorm it. I would begin by writing this in my notepad of keywords:
nike baby shoes
nike baby shoe
baby nike shoes
baby nike shoe
nike shoes for baby
nike shoes for my baby
nike shoes for a baby
nike shoe for baby
nike shoe for my baby
nike shoe for a baby
nike shoes for babies
nike shoe for babies
nike shoes babies
nike shoe babies
nike babies shoes
nike babies shoe
babies nike shoe
babies nike shoes
And on and on and on. You also need to remember that many people will not put a space in between the keywords such
as:
"baby shoes"
they might type:
babyshoes or babyshoe
When I entered the keyword babyshoe into the keyword suggestion tool I found that 73 people searched on that
keyword last month.
And guess what? At that time, there is only 1 person bidding on this
particular keyword at Yahoo for the base amount of 0.10 cents which
we will talk about later.
This means is there is virtually no competition for you on that keyword and there are thousands upon
thousands of keywords just like this one available by utilizing this
technique.
Another strategy you should pay
attention to is to look for misspellings
such as baby shos or baby sheos.
There are many other keyword tools and services
which many consider to be
much better than the Yahoo Research Tool. One we highly recommend is Keyword
Elite. Keyword Elite quickly and
easily generates many mispelling variations, some of which you might
never come up with in a million years. If you can at all afford to
fork out the small fee for this awesome piece of software, you will
not be disappointed.
We also have additional keyword tools
listed
within our Guru
Tools page in our menu in the left hand side of the page.
Step 7. Save
terms you have collected into a text pad or word document for use in
a later step.
Create Your Web
Site
You found and researched your market.
You have collected keywords/terms you want to promote. But before
you submit your ads you're going to need a website.
Step 8. Now
you are ready to build your web page or web site for
your product in order to promote it.
* You have many options to build a web site, we will be using a HTML editor to build your web site. We use and recommend Microsoft
Frontpage, which is what we will be using
to perform the examples you see on the videos.
If you do not have the money to buy Frontpage at this time then we recommend you try Netscape HTML Editor - It's free.
NOTE: Watch the video for
instructions how to build your web site.
Upload Your Web
Site With FTP Software
Step 9. Click
on your FTP program and upload your web site. If
you don't have one SmartFTP.com
offers theirs for free.
* Watch the videos for detailed step
by step Videos on how to upload your web pages.
Setting Up Your
Google Adwords Account
Step 10.
You are now ready to start advertising your product and where better than
Google. The reason being, Google is THE most popular and largest search engine on the
planet and can potentially bring you thousands and thousands of
people seeking your product in as little as 10 minutes.
NOTE: Click here to see
answers to
common Google Adwords questions.
Step 11. To get started, click on the
Google
Login link.
Step 12.
Next you will choose from the:
- Starter Edition and the
Standard Edition
The Starter Edition is for those with
only one product. For what we teach, you are going to have multiple
products. Therefore we recommend that you choose the
"Standard Edition" and click on the "Continue" button at the bottom of the page.
Step 13.
In this step you will choose the languages of your target audience.
English is the default but you can choose from French, German, Chinese or any other language if you can market to that
group.
Step 14. Just
below you will see "Target Customers By Location". You may choose to market your product to specific:
- Countries and Territories
- Regions and Cities
- and Customized
We recommend that you choose "Countries and Territories". Actually we
have never used any other option because we have always chosen products to market
nationwide.
"Regions and Cities" and "Customized" allows you to target customers
within specific cities and regions even down to a specific distance from
your business or any location. Not available in all locations.
* Again... we recommend you choose "Countries and
Territories" and click on the "Continue" button at the bottom of the
page.
Step 15. On this page you will choose the countries and territories
you desire to target... United States, Canada, Australia, Norway, Spain,
UK.
After selecting your target audience click on the "Continue Button" at the bottom of the page.
Creating Your Google
Ad
Step 16.
Here is where you will create
your Ad. A good way to get ideas for Ads that work is to perform a search at
Google for one of your search terms or phrases you found
in Step 6 and see how other advertisers have formed their ads.
HEADLINE:
Your Headline is your Title. It's a good idea to use your keyword as your title whenever possible.
DESCRIPTION 1:
This is where you insert a benefit. Always place benefits first. People don't care as much as your product features and they want to know how this program or product is going to benefit them.
DESCRIPTION 2:
This is where you place your product features.
DISPLAY URL:
This is the URL or link which will be visible to your audience underneath your ad.
DESTINATION URL:
This is the URL or link which will take your visitors to the actual page you are promoting. Either your web site or your products web site.
After creating your ad, click on the "Continue Button" at the bottom of the page.
NOTE: You can edit your ads at any time in the future.
* Watch the Video to see in detail
how we recommend you to create your Ads.
How To Separated
Your Keywords Into Groups
Step 17.
Recommendations:
* If you want to really understand just how Google works then we recommend that
you read Perry Marshall's
Definitive
Guide to Google Adwords. He is considered the Grand Wizard of
Google Adwords.
The next step is what separates the successful from the unsuccessful at Google. You do not just want to copy and paste your keyword list into the keywords
box as is.
First off, you need to categorize your keywords. Don't just group them all together.
Here is an example of keywords which would be grouped into two different categories.
south carolina realtor
south carolina realtor company
realtor in south carolina
find realtor in south carolina |
sc realtor
sc realtor company
realtor in sc
find realtor in sc |
As you can see, I have separated the keywords containing
South Carolina from the keywords containing the abbreviation SC. By doing this, you would write 2 different ads for two sets of keywords.
For example:
South Carolina Realtor
Research And Compare Realtors Online. Find The Best Agent Near You Free!
yourdomain.com/south-carolina |
SC Realtor
Research And Compare Realtors Online.
Find The Best Agent Near You Free!
yourdomain.com/sc-realtors |
Let me explain so that you can understand what I have done:
- Your Headline contains your keyword
- Your second line always contains a benefit
- Your third line contains a feature.
- Your bottom line is the URL located at the bottom of your ad. When possible place your keyword in
the URL as well. For example, mydomain.com/keyword replacing my domain with my actual domain name and the keyword with the keyword
you are promoting.
We go to these extra steps when we create Ad titles and descriptions
so it will be targeted to our keywords and possibly give us a better
Click Through Ratio.
To explain... The Clickthrough Ratio or (CTR) is the amount of times our ad is clicked upon verses how many times it is viewed. For example, if it is shown 100 times and clicked on 2 times then it has a clickthrough
ratio (CTR) of 2%. CTR is also a very important factor at
Google, which along with bid pricing helps to determine the positioning of your ads.
In other words, if your ad has a higher CTR than your competitor, you may be able to have a better ad placement at
Google while paying less than your competitor... very important.
This is why you want your keywords to be directly related to your Ad.
Understanding
Matching Options
Step 18. There are 3 different ways you can enter your keywords at
google called Keyword
Matching Options.
- Broad Match
- Phrase Match
- Exact Match
Broad Match is the default option. You should be very careful with broad matches.
They can bring in a lot of traffic, however, it can be less targeted
than phrase and exact match.
If you include a general keyword or keyword phrase such as "tennis shoes" - in your keyword list, your ads will appear when a user's search contains
"tennis and shoes" and possibly along with other terms such as
"cheap tennis shoes", "women shoes for tennis",
"new tennis shoes" and so on in any order.
Phrase Match are keywords which you will need to surround with "quotation marks" such as "tennis
shoes". When entered this way, your ad will appear when a user searches on the phrase
"tennis shoes", in this exact order, but is can possibly show up with other terms in the query. For example,
"red tennis shoes" but NOT for "shoes for
tennis".
Exact Match are keywords you surround in [brackets]- If you surround your keywords in brackets such as [tennis shoes] - your ads will ONLY appear when users search for the specific phrase
"tennis shoes", in this order and no other way.
Entering Keywords
At Google
Step 19. Many
people suggest to use ALL 3 forms of matching
options. However, we use and recommend Phrase and Exact Match.
You can easily insert brackets and
quotes into your terms by clicking on the
Adwords
Wrapper and pasting your first group of keywords into the box
at the top left of the page and then clicking "Wrap Adwords".
You can now easily copy the "Phrase Match" and "Exact
Match" keywords and go back to the Google web site to paste
those keywords into the box.
For example, my first group of keywords would look like this:
"find realtor in south carolina"
"realtor in south carolina"
"south carolina realtor"
"south carolina realtor company"
[find realtor in south carolina]
[realtor in south carolina]
[south carolina realtor]
[south carolina realtor company]
My first four keywords with the "" marks are phrase match. And the last four with the [] are exact match.
We mainly stick to Phrase and Exact Match, but that's not to say that
Broad Match is not a good thing because occasionally you may find it worth while.
However, with broad & phrase matching you MUST use what Google calls
Negative
Keywords to eliminate unwanted clicks to your ads.
By entering a negative keyword, you will prevent your ad from showing when
users perform a search containing the keyword you do not want to
promote.
For example... let's say you have the keyword "south carolina
realtor" set as a broad match term, but you do not want your ad to show for certain keywords such as
"free" or "cheap". You can enter the keywords "free" and "cheap" as a negative keyword and if anyone types in
"free
south carolina realtor" or "cheap south carolina
realtor", your ad will not show for that keyword phrase.
However, it could show if someone typed in "best
south carolina realtor" or "compare south carolina
realtor".
The reason for this is if you are bidding on "south carolina
realtor", you wouldn't want people who are searching for" free
south carolina realtor" to see your ad and click on it because the result will be you
would be charged for the click and someone looking for something for free is most likely not
wanting to pay for anything. The goal is to make money and free
gives you nothing.
In your keyword research you may also come across a lot of terms you
do not want to target. By entering your terms as negative matches, you will be able to cut down on wasteful clicks.
Here's how you do it. You can enter negative keywords with a minus in front of the keyword like this:
-free
-cheap
-weichert
-remax
This way, your ad will not show up when someone performed a search containing these
type terms.
So, with terms we gathered along with negative keywords, our keyword list might look something like the following:
"find realtor in south carolina"
"realtor in south carolina"
"south carolina realtor"
"south carolina realtor company"
[find realtor in south carolina]
[realtor in south carolina]
[south carolina realtor]
[south carolina realtor company]
-free
-cheap
-weichert
-remax
You will now copy and paste for the above list into your keyword box
at Google.
Once you enter the keywords into the keyword box click the
"Continue" button at the bottom of the page.
Step 20. On this page you see "Choose a currency".
Select the currency you will be using to pay for your advertising costs with Google. Most likely this will be US Dollars
(USD $) If not select otherwise.
Step 21. You
will now enter the maximum amount you are willing to spend on
average per day. Google will stop your ads once you have reached your daily spending limit.
Though we would recommend you dedicate a little more towards your
advertisement, and until you become familiarize yourself with the
Google system, you may want to leave this at $5. As you understand
the system you will certainly want to raise this amount. You can raise this or lower this anytime you like.
Step 22.
Next you will enter the maximum amount you are willing to pay each time someone clicks on your
ad?
You can set this to as much or as little as you want, just
understand the more you are willing to pay, especially in the
beginning, the higher likelihood you will achieve better positions
in Google results. The maximum amount you are willing to pay, plus
your overall click through ratio will determine the positioning of
your ad. As mentioned earlier, as time goes by and your clickthrough ratio increases you can achieve better positions paying a
less amount. Google rewards ads with high clickthrough ratios by
giving better positions at less cost per click.
You might consider setting this at 0.05 cents
while you get better acquainted how Google's system works. After you
have familiarized yourself with Google, you will want to monitor and
adjust bids based on these factors:
1. Commission received from your
affiliate partner.
2. How well your ad is performing
3. Conversions to sells
Obviously the better performing ads
which are converting to sales gives you more room to increase your
bid for that particular ad. We can't tell you how much you should
bid. Only you have that ability to test your clicks to conversion.
So test, test, test...
Click the
"continue button" at the bottom of the page.
Step 23. You
will now review your ad and keyword(s). Once satisfied click on the
"Continue to Sign Up" button.
Step 24.
Now you will need to choose between...
- I have an email address and password I already use with Google services like AdSense, Gmail, Orkut, or the personalized home page.
OR
- I do not use these other services.
This is just a matter of preference. If you already have other
accounts at Google you can use one of your pre-existing login
information. Or if you would prefer to keep them separate, you can
choose the second choice and create a unique account just for Google
Adwords.
Step 25.
Google will now send you a confirmation email to the email address that entered.
Click on the link within the email to confirm your account.
You can then enter your credit card or payment information to officially open the account.
* You have now created your "Google Adwords" account and are ready to
receive traffic and make sales.
Now To The Good Stuff
Managing Your
Google Adwords Account
Step 26. Now you have created your Google Adwords account.
There are some very important things you need to know about managing your account.
Click on the "Google Login" link in the right hand column and login to your Google Adwords account.
Now check the box next to your Campaign Name and click on the "Edit Settings" button.
Here you will see your Campaign name which you can change to anything you want
which helps you to remember it.
Just to the left of this you can see the budget you set and the delivery method
which is checked beneath it.
The delivery method can be set at:
-Standard: Show ads evenly over time
-Accelerated: Show ads as quickly as possible
You can choose either. The default is Standard, however, we select "Accelerated" in order to show
our ads as much as possible.
Below you will see advanced options which I would advise leaving as
"Optimize: Show better performing ads more often".
On the right hand side of the page at the top you will see Networks:
This is referring to where you would like for you ads to show within
the Google Network. What
is the Google Network?
I recommend selecting these two boxes...
- Google search
When users search for my keywords on Google
- Search network
When users search for my keywords on Google's search partners
I do NOT recommend using the Content
Network. If you choose Content Network, your ads will show up on other
PEOPLE's web sites that choose to display Google Adsense. In many instances this traffic
can be untargeted resulting in lots of costs and very minimal sales results.
HOWEVER... in some rare instances content match can be worth it. The reason being, the bids are usually much cheaper than with the Google Search network but it depends highly upon the market you are targeting.
* In most cases Content Match is NOT recommended.
Below you will see your "Target Audience". This is language that you chose when setting up your
account.
Just below this you will see the
"Countries and Territories" that you selected when setting up your
account.
All of these settings can be edited at any time that you decide to do so.
Creating New Ad Groups
Our Final Step
Step 27.
Depending upon how many terms you have separated into groups, you
will likely want to go back and create more Ad
Groups within your
original campaign.
Remember how we separated our South Carolina group of keywords from our SC group of
keywords in Step 17? In this example I would now go back and get the SC keywords group and create another Ad Group
within the same campaign specifically tailored for that group of keywords.
Here's how to do that:
- Login to your Google Adwords account and click on the campaign that you created.
- Now click on the "Create a New Ad Group" link.
- From here you can name this ad group anything you like. If we were to go with our second group of keywords,
as an example we would likely name it SC Realtors.
- Again you would choose your target language and choose your customers by location.
- Next we would create our ad for this set of keywords just as we did previously.
- Next click on the Adwords Wrapper link in the right hand under
Keyword Tools.
- Enter the keywords into the box midway down the page and click Wrap Adwords.
- Now copy both the Phrase and Exact Match keywords and paste them
into the box at Google. Be sure to enter your negative keywords if you use Broad or Phrase matching.
- Select your maximum spending limit per day
- Select your maximum cost per click
- Preview your ad and keywords and click "Save Campaign"
* As part of our tutorials we used the
example cell phones. And to find a product we took you to Commission
Junction but you need to know there are many affiliate programs
to be found outside of affiliate networks.
For example, a company offering cell
phones and plans is
telebay.
You can find many affiliate programs by browsing the web and searching their
web site for a link labeled affiliate program or associate program.
You'll be surprised how many top brand companies who are willing to
pay you cash for traffic.
When you find one, click on their
link and view their contract and terms of service for entering their
affiliate program. For a quick and easy find, visit our list of Multi-Tier
Programs.
You can also go to search engines
like Google or Yahoo! and type in
"affiliate programs". While this type of search brings in all sorts of
results from companies that offer a wide range of affiliate programs, many of them are
poorly run programs, so be prepared to weed through
the muck.
